You need to know

Attendance information from educational institutions

We collect attendance information from schools, colleges, and distance education providers to work out if a student meets the attendance requirements to receive ABSTUDY School Term Allowance.

A student must attend school for a minimum of 85% of days in a school term to qualify for ABSTUDY School Term Allowance.  Schools are responsible for deciding if a student’s part or full day absence is unapproved or unauthorised as defined by state/territory Education Department Guidelines.

The request is made under Section 343(1) of the Student Assistance Act 1973.

Term start dates for ABSTUDY Away From Home students from educational institutions

We collect term start dates for ABSTUDY Away From Home students from schools and hostels to work out the amount of ABSTUDY assistance payable on behalf of eligible students. ABSTUDY Away From Home students must commence by the 3rd Friday of each term for the full amount of ABSTUDY assistance to be paid to a school and/or hostel.

ABSTUDY assistance is paid to schools and hostels in four bulk payments per academic year.  Payments for eligible students are delivered to a school and/or hostel in the 4th week of each school term.

The request is made under Section 343(1) of the Student Assistance Act 1973.

Claiming Under 16 Boarding Supplement for ABSTUDY students

The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) uses data derived from the Non-government Schools Census (undertaken in August each year) to assess a boarding school’s qualification for Under 16 Boarding Supplement for the following year.

The Under 16 Boarding Supplement is only available to schools that:

  • provide boarding facilities and can demonstrate that these boarding facilities are integrated in the school’s infrastructure, and
  • have at least 10 per cent of students enrolled at the school Indigenous Australians or a minimum of 20 Indigenous students.
