Indigenous Cadetship Program

The Department of Human Services Indigenous Cadetship Program assists students to complete study at an approved tertiary institution.

Applications

Applications are called each year from Australians who:

  • are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent
  • identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  • are accepted as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander in the community in which they live or have lived
  • are enrolled in an approved course of study at an Australian tertiary institution

Successful candidates are sponsored for the length of their study towards an:

  • undergraduate degree course at an Australian tertiary institution

As candidates complete their course of study, they are selected for positions that will be available within the Department of Human Services. Areas of study include:

  • Social Work

Potential Department of Human Services Cadets need to register on the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations website, no later than August. The department will commence the selection process in September.

What the Cadetship provides

Cadets will be paid a book and compulsory equipment allowance, and a salary (different rates apply for periods whilst studying and in the workplace).

Obligations

Cadets are not required to work in their home offices during the mid semester vacations (ie. Easter and September). Cadets are however required to work in their home office during the mid-year and end-of-year university breaks.

Cadets progress is reviewed at the end of each semester. On successful completion of the training and tertiary education requirements, the Cadet will be advanced to the nominated, appropriate level.
