Claiming Parenting Payment

Before you start

Check if you are eligible for this payment before you start your claim.

You will need an active Centrelink online account to claim Parenting Payment online.

If you have never been a customer you will need to visit your nearest service centre to register. You need to bring photo identification with you. We will help you register for a Centrelink online account.

Anyone who has previously received a payment or concession from us will be considered a customer. It does not matter how long ago this was, you can still register for a Centrelink online account.

Until you register and have an active Centrelink online account, you won’t be able to make a claim online.

If you do not have a Centrelink online account

If you have your Customer Reference Number (CRN), you can complete your registration for an online account now.


If you do not have a CRN, you will need to register for a CRN and online account. We can help you do this. Please bring identity documents to your nearest service centre.

Submit your claim

During the claim process there will be questions for you to answer about your circumstances. These include income, assets and personal information about you and your partner, if you have one. You will need to have your bank account and tax file numbers handy.

Make sure you finish and submit your online claim within 14 days of starting it. We can backdate your payments to this date if you’re eligible.

If you are submitting your claim over the phone or in person, we will tell you if we need any further information or documentation to assess your claim.

Supporting forms and documentation

You may need to complete some additional forms to help us assess your claim accurately, depending on your and your partner’s personal circumstances.

If you are claiming online you can upload some of your supporting documents using the Document Lodgement Service. You cannot use this function to submit confirmation of identity documents. Original confirmation of identity documents must be submitted in person at a service centre.

If we ask you to provide other documents and forms, you will need to submit these within 14 days or your claim may be rejected. The sooner we receive your documents, the sooner we can work out your entitlement.

Unable to claim online

The easiest way to claim Parenting Payment is online. If there are reasons you cannot claim online, you can call us or visit your nearest service centre to start your claim.

Claim outcome

If you are eligible for Parenting Payment, we will let you know when your payment will start and how much you will get paid.

You have the right to appeal any decision we make.
