Claiming the Australian Government Rebate on Private Health Insurance

You can pay your premiums fortnightly, monthly, in yearly instalments or in advance. There are three ways to claim the Australian Government Rebate on Private Health Insurance.

1. From your fund

You can ask your fund to give you the rebate as a premium reduction, reducing your upfront costs. To claim the Australian Government Rebate on Private Health Insurance as a premium reduction, register with your health fund who will send you a form or tell you what you need to do.

2. From a Medicare Service Centre

If you have paid the full, upfront cost for your private health insurance, you can get your rebate from your local Medicare Service Centre, or you can send us a claim form.

Fill in the claim form below (or get one from your Medicare Service Centre) and attach a special receipt from your registered health fund.

Only premiums paid in the current, or the immediately previous financial year, can be claimed through Medicare. Claims before this period must be claimed from the Australian Taxation Office.

3. From the Australian Taxation Office

The Australian Government Rebate on Private Health Insurance may be claimed back on your annual income tax return, if you have paid the full, upfront cost. Your health fund will give you a statement at the end of the financial year to help you fill in your tax return.
