Expired Medicare cards

There is an expiry date on the bottom right hand corner of your Medicare card. If your card has recently expired you will automatically receive a new card in the mail. Alternatively, you can:

  • call 132 011
  • visit your local Medicare Service Centre
  • send a request to the Department of Human Services, GPO Box 9822 in your capital city (a form is not required). You will need to attach a certified copy of identification such as your driver's licence.

Note: if you have changed your address in the past four weeks, you will need to visit your local Medicare Service Centre with proof of identity such as a passport or driver's licence. If your card expired more than six months ago, you will need to visit your local Medicare Service Centre. You will need to provide proof of identity and you may be required to provide residency documents such as a rates notice, rental contract or employment contract.

If you are living or holidaying overseas, your Medicare card can't be reissued until you return to Australia.
