Community events and departmental commitments 2011-2013
The department has a presence in the local community and works with community and government organisations at the local and national level. Our employees also personally contribute to a range of charities.
Community events
The department takes part in community events to mark days and weeks of significance. These events are open to the public and offer information on our payments and services.

Seniors Week
Seniors Week is an opportunity to focus on the valuable contribution seniors Australian’s make to our communities. Seniors Week is celebrated at different times throughout Australia. -
Youth Week
National Youth Week celebrates and recognises the value of all young Australians to their communities by giving them an opportunity to express their ideas and opinions. -
Families Week
National Families Week celebrates the vital role that families play in helping children to develop, learn and grow, and reflect on the influence families have on a child’s wellbeing. -
NAIDOC week
NAIDOC week will be held from 1 - 8 July 2012. This year, celebrate "the Spirit of the Tent Embassy: 40 years on" with events being held throughout Australia. Find an event near you -
Carers Week
Carers Week is an annual event run by Carers Australia which recognises the commitment of those who care for people who are ill, frail aged or have a disability. This year Carers Week will be held from 14 - 20 October 2012. The theme for this year’s Carers Week is Care Aware. -
International Day of People with a Disability
International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD) is an annual event which is celebrated nationwide on Monday 3 December 2012. IDPWD brings together individuals, businesses, community organisations and governments to celebrate and acknowledge the contributions, skills and achievements of people with disability.
Sponsorship, partnership and fundraising
Every two years the department commits to corporate-level sponsorship, partnership and fundraising opportunities with not-for-profit and government organisations, offering a mutually beneficial relationship. Over the next two years we will support:
- OnSide Victoria to connect culturally and linguistically disadvantaged youth to community organisations through sports games and forums. We will have a presence at all OnSide Victoria events, offering volunteers. We will also support the distribution of information and fund the upgrade of the OnSide Victoria website
- Heaps Decent teaching underprivileged young people life and industry relevant skills through music workshops. Heaps Decent find culturally relevant ways to tell their stories to disengaged youth, the department will offer marketing and event support for the organisation
- Canberra Blind Society in the development, production and launch of hospital kits for blind or low-vision people and their families and carers. The hospital kits will help patients maintain a level of independence
- Cancer Council, selling fundraising merchandise and cause-related marketing for Daffodil Day 26 August 2012 and Pink Ribbon Day 26 October 2012.

Charity support
Our employees also personally support a range of charities.
We commit to charities to support annually, with charities chosen for 2011-2012.
The department also has a workplace giving program where employee contributions can be made to charities such as the Ross Divett Foundation.
