Baby Bonus
Baby Bonus is a payment that helps with the costs of a newborn baby or adopted child.
From 1 July 2011, changes to Baby Bonus will assist with the upfront cost of having a child come into your primary care. If you are eligible for Baby Bonus, you will now receive a higher amount in the first instalment than in the subsequent 12 fortnightly instalments.
Baby Bonus, which is paid in 13 fortnightly instalments, may be paid to eligible families following the birth (including stillbirth) of a child. You can also claim it for adopted children who enter your care before they are 16 years of age.
An income test applies to Baby Bonus. This is based on your family’s income for the first six months after your child is born or the child entered your care. If your family does not meet the income test, you may qualify for Paid Parental Leave Scheme.
You cannot receive both Paid Parental Leave and Baby Bonus.
If you are eligible for both payments, you can choose which payment is the best financial decision for your family by using the Paid Parental Leave Comparison Estimator.
To receive Baby Bonus you must submit your claim through the Family Assistance Office no later than 52 weeks after:
- the birth of your child
- the child entering care as part of an adoption process
