Newstart Allowance

Newstart Allowance provides financial help if you are looking for work and supports you to take part in activities that may increase your chances of finding a job.

You may be eligible for Newstart Allowance if you are:

  • aged 21 years or over but under Age Pension age
  • looking for paid work
  • prepared to enter into an Employment Pathway Plan and meet activity test requirements
  • not involved in industrial action

The amount of Newstart Allowance you are paid depends on your situation. Waiting periods may apply.

When you claim Newstart Allowance, you may have to enter into an Employment Pathway Plan. This plan outlines the activities you agree to do while looking for work and to continue getting the allowance. Activities could include applying for jobs, undertaking a course or other study, or working part-time.

Other services and payments

If you are looking for work, you may be able to access other Australian Government services and programs. You may also be able to get additional payments and benefits.

Short term access to Newstart Allowance for New Zealand citizens

After 26 February 2001, people who arrive in Australia on a New Zealand passport are generally issued a
Non-Protected Special Category Visa (SCV) on arrival.

From 26 February 2011, non-protected SCV holders who have lived in Australia for at least ten continuous years since 26 February 2001 may be eligible to receive Newstart Allowance for up to 6 months.

You will still have to meet all other requirements, such as waiting periods, to get a payment.
