Indigenous specialist officers

Indigenous specialist officers help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians who live in urban, rural, regional and remote communities throughout Australia do business with the Centrelink and Medicare programs.

If you need help accessing Centrelink and Medicare services, you can talk to people who specialise in helping Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians do business with various government agencies. There are a number of different types of Indigenous specialist officers.  

Indigenous Service Officers

The Centrelink program has a network of Indigenous Service Officers that operate across Australia as contact points between Indigenous communities and Centrelink. These specialist officers make sure you and your community know about Centrelink services and payments. They talk about any changes to payments and services and give advice and support to customers and community members.

Indigenous Customer Service Advisers

These advisers work in Centrelink Service Centres. They give you individual help and can also ask other Centrelink services and community agencies to help you.

Remote Servicing Teams

These teams travel to rural and remote areas throughout Australia to help you use Centrelink programs and services.

Medicare staff working for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Access and Employment line

These officers answer when you phone the 1800 access line with questions about doing business with the Medicare program. They understand the special needs of Indigenous people and Indigenous culture.

Medicare Liaison Officers for Indigenous Access

These officers help you enrol in Medicare programs. They provide outreach services and work closely with others in Indigenous health services.
