Clean Energy Supplement

An ongoing, automatic payment to help eligible households with any impact from the carbon price on everyday expenses.

Clean Energy Supplement

If you are eligible for the Clean Energy Supplement you will be paid automatically with your regular payment - you do not need to contact us.

Household Assistance Package

This payment is a part of the Household Assistance Package. The package also includes the Clean Energy Advance, Essential Medical Equipment Payment, Low Income Supplement, Low Income Family Supplement and Single Income Family Supplement.

Eligibility basics

  • receive an income support payment, pension or Family Tax Benefit from us
  • are residing in Australia

If you receive an income support payment or Family Tax Benefit from the Australian Government, the Clean Energy Supplement will be automatically added to your regular payment for:

  • pensioners and most income support recipients from 22 March 2013
  • Commonwealth Seniors Health Card holders who receive Seniors Supplement and Pensioners who receive the Pension Supplement quarterly from 24 June 2013
  • Family Tax Benefit recipients from 1 July 2013
  • youth and most students from 1 January 2014, following a second Clean Energy Advance in July 2013.

If you are eligible, you will be paid automatically – you don’t need to contact us.

The amount of your Clean Energy Supplement depends on your circumstances and the payment you receive.

The Clean Energy Supplement is part of the Household Assistance Package and will be paid following the period covered by the Clean Energy Advance.

Please note: your first payment of Clean Energy Supplement may be a part payment.

Eligibility for the Clean Energy Supplement

The Clean Energy Supplement will be paid automatically with your regular payment, providing you are residing permanently in Australia.

As the Clean Energy Supplement is automatically paid with your regular payment, the date on which you begin receiving the Clean Energy Supplement depends on your regular payment and how often you receive it.

The rate of the Clean Energy Supplement you receive will depend on your circumstances, and the payment you regularly receive.

First steps

Receive the Clean Energy Supplement

You do not need to apply for the Clean Energy Supplement.  If you are eligible you will be paid the Clean Energy Supplement automatically with your regular payment - you do not need to contact us.

If you are paid both income support and Family Tax Benefit you will receive a separate Clean Energy Supplement with each payment. 

The Clean Energy Supplement is non-taxable and will not be considered income for family assistance or income support purposes.

If your regular payment is subject to Income Management, the Clean Energy Supplement will be income managed in line with your existing Income Management arrangements.

If you are a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card holder not currently receiving Seniors Supplement, and wish to commence receiving both the Seniors Supplement and Clean Energy Supplement, you will need to supply your bank details. 

The Clean Energy Supplement may be used to recover overpayments.

Clean Energy Supplement payment frequency

Most customers can elect to receive the Clean Energy Supplement quarterly in arrears. You can change your payment frequency at any time by contacting us.

Note: Seniors Supplement and ABSTUDY Masters and Doctorate customers can only receive their Clean Energy Supplement quarterly in arrears.
