Medicare Teen Dental Plan

The Medicare Teen Dental Plan makes it more affordable for eligible families to keep their teenagers’ teeth in good health.

Keep your teenagers’ teeth in good health

The Medicare Teen Dental Plan helps eligible families with the cost of an annual preventative dental check.

The Medicare Teen Dental Plan helps you with the cost of an annual preventative dental check. It is available for all teenagers who:

  • are aged between 12 to 17 years
  • receive (or their family receives) certain government benefits, such as the Family Tax Benefit (Part A) for at least part of the calendar year
  • are eligible for Medicare.

Once each calendar year, we will automatically send eligible teenagers, their families or guardians/carers a voucher to help cover the costs of a preventative dental check. The value of the voucher is up to $163.05.

You need to know

Advice about eligibility

A letter and voucher advising of a teenager’s eligibility for a preventative dental check will be sent to the teenager, family or guardian/carer getting the government payment.

If the teenager is in equally shared-care arrangements, a letter and voucher will be sent to each parent or guardian/carer. The first family to claim the service will be entitled to the full benefit.

Note: if a teenager becomes eligible in either November or December, and has not received a voucher, call us on 132 011 or visit your local DHS Service Centre to confirm if there is an entitlement in that year.

The voucher

The Medicare Teen Dental Plan voucher must be used for a preventative dental check.

A preventative dental check is made up of an oral examination and, if necessary, the dentist may:

  • take x-rays
  • provide a scale and clean
  • provide a fluoride treatment
  • give oral hygiene instructions
  • provide advice about diet
  • seal pits or cracks in a tooth (fissure sealing).
