Payments for Indigenous Australians

We provide payments to help Indigenous Australians finish studies and to support them while they are looking for work.

Financial assistance for Indigenous Australians

ABSTUDY provides help with costs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians who are studying or undertaking an Australian apprenticeship.

If you need to give us your parents’ or guardians’ taxable income for your annual ABSTUDY assessment please complete the Advise Parental Income online service.

Newstart Allowance provides financial help if you are looking for work and supports you while you take part in activities that may increase your chances of finding a job.

The Assistance for Isolated Children Scheme helps with the extra costs of educating children who cannot go to an appropriate state school on a daily basis because they:

  • live in an isolated area
  • have a disability
  • have special health needs.

You may also be able to get the Remote Area Allowance if you receive certain income support payments, such as Newstart Allowance or Age Pension, and live in a remote area.

The Community Development Employment Projects program helps to provide Indigenous Australians with employment opportunities in areas where there may be limited employment. Find out more on the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs website.
