Studying and training - full time students

Payments and services are available to support people who are planning to study or who are studying full time. Families of students may also be able to get assistance.

  • primary students
  • secondary students
  • tertiary students
  • parents and guardians of school-aged children including those who live in a geographically isolated area
  • school-aged children with special health needs or a disability
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their parents or guardians

The amount and type of assistance you may be able to get depends on several things, including:

  • the age of your children
  • your family income and assets
  • if you are getting or paying child support
  • if you are already getting income assistance

Tertiary and independent students - financial support

You may be able to get financial help if you are studying or training. The course you are undertaking must be approved and can include:

  • secondary courses
  • undergraduate courses
  • associate and some diplomas
  • TAFE courses
  • postgraduate courses

The amount and type of assistance you may be able to get also depends on a number of things, including your age, if you are single or partnered, your income and assets and if you have children.

If you cannot meet your study or training obligations because you have a short-term illness or are injured, you may still be able to get support during this time.
