When someone dies
Payments and services are available to support you after someone close to you dies, including information on the steps that need to be taken and the emotional and financial support available.
Who does this information apply to?
People who are experiencing bereavement after the death of a family member or person they were caring for.
What to do first
When someone close to you dies, the hospital or other relevant authority normally takes care of the formalities and paperwork for you. You will need a signed Death Certificate to make funeral arrangements.
If the person who has died had an insurance policy or a funeral plan, you will need to contact the relevant company to let them know about the death and discuss matters with them.
Who to notify
A number of people and organisations need to be notified when someone dies. It will help if you have important reference numbers, such as Tax File Number, Centrelink reference number, Medicare number or bank account number before you contact them.
Some organisations may need a copy of the Death Certificate. While it may take several weeks to get a copy, organisations should be notified of the death as soon as possible.
