Centrelink fundraiser helps rural kids with back-to-school costs

14 December 2007

Minister for Human Services, Senator Joe Ludwig, has praised a new Centrelink fundraiser – the Billy lids (kids!) Drought Breaker – which is helping parents and carers in drought-affected rural communities meet their children’s back-to-school costs.

All money raised will go to the Foundation for Rural Regional Renewal (FRRR), a charitable foundation that, through partners, issue vouchers for families to use in local stores on items such as school uniforms, books, sports gear and stationery.

“Centrelink’s network of staff who work on drought assistance are often from farming backgrounds and have a close affinity with rural and regional communities,” Senator Ludwig said.

“The Billy lids (kids!) Drought Breaker is a wider opportunity for Centrelink staff to show their support for those doing it tough in the drought at what can be a difficult time of year.

“I’m delighted to say that the initial response from staff has been fantastic, with one area within Centrelink already raising $1000.”

Centrelink employees can donate money directly to the appeal through their pay, or collect money through various office fundraising events held throughout December and January.

“Centrelink is pleased to be supporting a project that ultimately benefits children’s education, as this is such an important issue for parents and carers in rural and regional areas,” Senator Ludwig said.

Sylvia Admans, CEO of the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal, has welcomed the initiative.

“Centrelink’s generosity and commitment in contributing to FRRRs Back to School Program marks the start of a great new partnership. We really welcome the support as the extent of need at back-to-school time is an additional financial stress on already-stretched rural families.” Ms Admans said

Senator Ludwig also encouraged drought-affected farmers who haven’t explored drought assistance to contact Centrelink.

“While the recent rains in parts of Australia have been welcome, for farmers dealing with multiple crops failures, the rains have come far too late,” he said.

“I’d encourage farmers to contact the Australian Government’s Drought Assistance Line 13 2316 or the Murray-Darling Basin Assistance and Referral Line on Freecall ™1800 050 015 and test their eligibility for the range of drought assistance and other support that’s available.”
