Support only a phone call away this Christmas

14 December 2007

Christmas is typically a time of celebration but for some Australian families in drought-affected areas, the season may bring added stress and emotional strain.

Minister for Human Services, Senator Joe Ludwig, said support is available during this time for people doing it tough.

“Rain is beginning to fall in many dry areas of the country which is a great relief, but it’s by no means an instant fix,” said Senator Ludwig. “Drought has had a serious impact on the well-being of many people living on the land and it will take time and support to turn that around.”

Senator Ludwig said people should not feel embarrassed or ashamed to seek out help when they most need it, especially during Christmas.

“Making contact with a Centrelink Social Worker can be a vital circuit breaker when you’re feeling overwhelmed and depressed or having family conflicts,” he said.

“Talking about problems may not put everything right, but it can make a huge difference when someone acknowledges the challenges you are facing.”

“Centrelink social workers can help you explore the range of options available, including support payments, and give a clearer perspective on a way forward.”

Anyone, not just Centrelink customers, can speak to a Centrelink Social Worker by phoning 13 1021 or by visiting their local Centrelink office.  Access to a Social Worker is also available by visiting the Drought Bus or by phoning the Drought Hotline on 13 2316.

“The telephone service means Centrelink Social Workers can provide immediate assistance to people in need, including those living in some of the more remote parts of the country,” said Senator Ludwig.

“The privacy and anonymity of the phone service when discussing personal concerns can also be very reassuring for those who may otherwise be reluctant to make contact.”

Senator Ludwig said, “Everyone is entitled to a happy festive season, and I’d encourage anyone who may be struggling emotionally at this time of year to call and take advantage of the free Centrelink social work service.”
