Local MP brings Minister to Mt Druitt to talk jobs
Minister for Human Services, Senator Joe Ludwig, joined Member for Chifley, Roger Price, in Mount Druitt today to discuss the effect of the global financial crisis on local jobs.
“This year is going to be a tough one. Unemployment is going up all around the world and it is already starting to hit us here at home,” Mr Price said.
“We have to do everything we can to support local jobs and help people who lose their jobs to get back into the workforce as soon as possible.”
“That’s why I asked the Minister to come to Mount Druitt to talk to people on the ground.”
Senator Ludwig said he understands this is a very stressful time for all families affected by job losses.
“Centrelink is ready to assist people get back on their feet as soon as possible during these difficult times,” Senator Ludwig said.
“It’s important people don’t self-assess and exclude themselves from the help that is available.”
“Centrelink will look at each individual’s circumstances and discuss with them what assistance they are entitled to.”
“Centrelink may also refer workers made redundant to an employment service provider where they will receive assistance to get back into the labour market.”
“A worker who has been made redundant is often eligible for personal and intensive support services and practical support. This includes training and accreditation, assistance in acquiring work clothes, tools and equipment and help with job interviews and resumes.”
“We spoke to a number of people who need help to get back on their feet”, Mr Price said.
“For many people this is the first time they have had to approach to Centrelink for assistance.”
“Centrelink has a variety of payments and services available to help people in difficult situations such as retrenchment or redundancy.”
“In addition to financial support, Centrelink has Financial Information Service Officers available to help people make more informed financial decisions about investment options.”
“They also conduct free seminars on a range of topics including financial planning, superannuation, understanding basic taxation requirements and social security provisions.”
