Preparing for Parental Leave Pay

If you and your employee have agreed on leave arrangements, there are steps you should follow to ensure you’re prepared to provide Parental Leave Pay.

To participate in the Paid Parental Leave scheme, you need to register your business with us. You can do this either online or over the phone. If you want to opt in to administer Parental Leave Pay for employees you’re not required to provide it to, you need to do this before they submit their claim to us.

If you manage the payroll for a number of businesses with different Australian Business Numbers (ABN), you’ll need to register each business separately.

Steps to prepare

  1. Register for Centrelink Business Online Services.
  2. Register your business for the Paid Parental Leave scheme.
  3. Know your employee’s entitlements and talk to them about Parental Leave Pay.
  4. If your employee makes a claim with us, we’ll contact you.

Registering online

The easiest way to register for the Paid Parental Leave scheme is by using Centrelink Business Online Services with an AUSkey.

An AUSkey is a digital credential that allows you to access a range of online government services on behalf of your business. AUSkey has replaced the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) digital certificate.

To get an AUSkey, visit the Australian Business Register website.

You can then register for the Paid Parental Leave scheme with your AUSkey or current ATO digital certificate any time through Centrelink Business Online Services.

If you don’t have an AUSkey or ATO digital certificate, you can still register for Centrelink Business Online Services but you won’t be able to add or update your bank details, or add new users online.

Registering over the phone

If you choose not to use Centrelink Business Online Services or you don’t have access to the internet, you can register by calling our National Business Gateway.

Once you’ve registered

We’ll send you a letter confirming your registration.

If you’ve registered online, you can choose to receive letters and payment advice from us through your Centrelink Business Online Services account.
