Description of the measure

The 2014-15 Budget measure, Apply the One-Week Ordinary Waiting Period to all Working Age Payments, now has a start date of 1 July 2015. The measure will no longer apply to claimants of Widow Allowance.

The Ordinary Waiting Period is a non-payment period of 1 week. Currently, new claimants of Newstart Allowance and Sickness Allowance must wait 1 week before they start receiving payments—unless the claimant is exempt or the waiting period is waived.

The Ordinary Waiting Period will be extended to other working age payments including new claimants of Youth Allowance (other), Parenting Payment Single and Parenting Payment Partnered.

In addition, the current rules will be changed so the Ordinary Waiting Period is served after other waiting periods and the current rule that allows the Ordinary Waiting Period to be waived due to severe financial hardship will be tightened.
