Social Security Agreement with Estonia

From 1 July 2016, the social security agreement between Australia and Estonia will help people to claim a pension from both countries.

Description of the measure

From 1 July 2016, the social security agreement between Australia and Estonia will help people to claim a pension from both countries.

The agreement will also exempt people temporarily working in either country from having to pay into both countries’ superannuation and pension schemes.

Who is affected by this measure

The measure will help people access retirement benefits if they live in Australia or Estonia and have lived and/or worked in both countries.

Who is eligible for this measure

Under this agreement, some periods of residence in Australia and some periods of employment in Estonia may be combined to allow a person to meet basic eligibility requirements for the Australian or Estonian pension.

The date this measure will start and finish

This is an ongoing measure scheduled to start on 1 July 2016 subject to completion of legal and treaty processes in both countries.
