Growing Jobs and Small Business - Youth Employment Strategy - intensive support for vulnerable job seekers

From 1 April 2016, the Supporting Parents to Plan and Prepare for Employment initiative will provide early support for parents on income support who are at risk of long term welfare dependency.

Description of the measure

To be eligible, parents will need to:

  • reside in 1 of 10 Local Government Areas
  • have been receiving Parenting Payment Partnered or Single for 6 months, and
  • have a youngest child aged between 6 months and 6 years of age

The 10 Local Government Areas are Logan, Rockhampton (Qld), Playford (SA), Bankstown, Wyong, Shellharbour (NSW), Greater Shepparton, Hume (Vic), Burnie (Tas), Kwinana (WA).

Young parents in the 10 Local Government Areas who are not in the workforce and not receiving income support will also be able to volunteer for this initiative.

Parents will be required to attend 6 monthly interviews with their employment services provider and participate in a compulsory activity that supports them to find work or increase their work capacity.

This initiative is a combined model of the existing Helping Young Parents and Supporting Jobless Families trials which will be extended until 31 March 2016.

Who is affected by this measure

This measure will affect people in the 10 Local Government Areas who have been receiving Parenting Payments for at least 6 months and who have a youngest child between 6 months and 6 years of age.
