Disability Support Pension – amending portability rules for para-athletes preparing for the Paralympic Games

This measure allows recipients to continue to receive Disability Support Pension for up to 28 days (for each departure) while they are overseas to attend an athletic competition or a related event.

Description of the measure

This measure allows recipients to continue to receive Disability Support Pension for up to 28 days (for each departure) while they are overseas to attend an athletic competition or a related event, where:

  • their attendance is necessary to qualify or prepare as a competitor for the Paralympic Games, and
  • the competition or event takes place within the 12 month period before the Paralympic Games

Who is eligible for this measure

Disability Support Pension recipients who leave Australia to attend an athletic competition, or related event, where:

  • that attendance is necessary to qualify or prepare as a competitor for the Paralympic Games, and
  • the competition or event takes place within the 12 month period before the Paralympic Games

Disability Support Pension recipients will need to have used their general 28 day portability entitlement within the last 12 months before they will be eligible for an assessment under this measure.

The date this measure will start and finish

This measure applies retrospectively to September 2015 and is ongoing.

This means that Disability Support Pension recipients who have attended eligible events in the 12 months before the September 2016 Paralympic Games can have any previous periods of non-payment reviewed.
