Healthier Medicare – removing obsolete services from the Medicare Benefits Schedule

From 1 July 2016, 24 Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) items will no longer be available under certain MBS categories.

Description of the measure

From 1 July 2016, 24 Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) items will no longer be available under the following MBS categories:

  • diagnostic imaging
  • ear, nose and throat surgery
  • gastroenterology
  • obstetrics, and
  • thoracic medicine

These items will be removed from the MBS for a number of reasons, including safety concerns with procedures, the services not aligning with contemporary clinical practice, or encouraging low value care.

Also, from 1 July 2016, 2 diagnostic imaging services will be amended so that Medicare benefits are only available to patients under 16 years of age.
