Medicare Benefits Schedule – Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the breast

From 1 November 2016, Medicare benefits will be available for 2 new breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) services.

Description of the measure

From 1 November 2016, Medicare benefits will be available for 2 new breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) services. This includes:

  • MRI of the breast for patients with occult breast cancer, and
  • MRI-guided biopsy of the breast for patients with suspected breast cancer, where the lesion is only identifiable by MRI

The new services will be available on MRI equipment with full or partial Medicare eligibility.

Who is eligible for this measure

Patients with occult breast cancer or suspected breast cancer, as well as health professionals who undertake these services.

The date this measure will start and finish

This measure will start on 1 November 2016 and is ongoing.
