Medicare Benefits Schedule – new and amended listings

This measure will introduce new services and make changes to existing services that can be claimed under the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS).

This measure started on 1 November 2016.

Description of the measure

This measure will introduce new services and make changes to existing services that can be claimed under the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS).

From 1 November 2016, new and amended listings to the MBS will include:

  • restricting co-claiming of exploration or ligation of great artery or great vein services with varicose vein services
  • restricting claiming of dermis, dermo fat or fascia graft services with spinal surgery services
  • changes to 3 services will be amended and 28 new services will be introduced with improved item descriptors
  • restricting 3 hip arthroscopy services to the management of non-femoroacetabular impingement (FAI)
  • streamlining allergy patch testing services, and creating new services to allow testing of a larger number of allergens at one time, and
  • replacing existing circumcision services with 2 new services based on the type of anaesthesia used, instead of patient age or health practitioner speciality
