Closure of Hunter River and Port Stephens Fisheries – assistance to individuals and businesses – extension

From 1 July 2016, targeted assistance to eligible individuals and businesses affected by the closure of Hunter River and Port Stephens fisheries will be extended.

Description of the measure

From 1 July 2016, targeted assistance to eligible individuals and businesses affected by the closure of Hunter River and Port Stephens fisheries will be extended.

The New South Wales Government is due to make a decision regarding the fisheries by 30 June 2016.

If the fisheries remain closed after 30 June 2016, the Australian Government will also expand the assistance package to include a Business Transition Payment.

Who is eligible for this measure

People involved in commercial fishing in affected areas may be eligible for an Income Recovery Subsidy payment. This is a fortnightly payment for people who are not eligible for any other income support payment or pension.

Small businesses may be able to claim the Business Assistance Payment and the Business Hardship Payment.

If by 30 June 2016 the NSW Government does not reopen the fisheries, affected businesses will be able to claim a Business Transition Payment of up to $25,000 to assist businesses pursue alternative sources of income if they wish to do so.

The date this measure will commence

The extension of the current financial assistance packages will be available from 1 July 2016. The extension period is 8 weeks following 30 June 2016.
