Information update: This Budget measure is subject to the passage of legislation.

Description of the measure

This measure will better align Pensioner Education Supplement (PES) and Education Entry Payment (EdEP) payment rates with the study loads.

For PES, eligible students with a study load:

  • 76 per cent or above will receive the full PES rate ($62.40 per fortnight)
  • between 51 and 75 per cent will receive 75 per cent of the PES rate ($46.80 per fortnight)
  • between 26 and 50 per cent will receive half the PES rate ($31.20 per fortnight)
  • of 25 per cent will receive 25 per cent of the PES rate ($15.60 per fortnight), and
  • less than 25 per cent will not be entitled to PES.

PES will only be paid during study periods, and not during semester breaks and holidays.

For EdEP, eligible students with a study load:

  • 76 per cent or above will receive the full EdEP rate ($208 annually)
  • between 51 and 75 per cent will receive 75 per cent of the EdEP rate ($156 annually)
  • between 26 and 50 per cent will receive half the EdEP rate ($104 annually)
  • of 25 per cent will receive 25 per cent of the EdEP rate ($52 annually), and
  • less than 25 per cent will not be entitled to EdEP.

The Australian Government previously announced that, subject to the passage of legislation, the PES and EdEP would cease. This decision has now been reversed and both payments will continue.
