Indigenous graduate applicants

We have graduate employment opportunities for people of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage.

Applications for our 2017 intake are now closed. Thank you and best of luck to all who applied. Keep up to date with what's happening on Facebook or as described in the recruitment process.

About the application process

If you apply through the Special Measures process, you will be assessed against the same recruitment methodologies and capability requirements as other graduate programme applicants. We will also provide culturally appropriate support mechanisms and an Indigenous contact officer to help you with the application and selection process.

Read more about our Recruitment process.

Confirm your heritage

As part of your application under the Special Measures provision, you will need to confirm your Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, or both heritage.

To confirm Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander heritage, or both, you must:

  • be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent,
  • identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander or both, and
  • be accepted as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person in your community

Heritage can be confirmed with a letter from an Indigenous organisation, a statutory declaration, a community Elder form or consent statement.

Letter from an Indigenous organisation or community Elder

A letter from an Indigenous organisation is the preferred method to confirm you identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, or both. However, you can also approach a Community Elder.

You can use the Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent by an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, or both Organisation letter to provide confirmation of heritage. This is also known as a Certificate of Aboriginality.

If you approach an organisation, they don’t need to use our standard letter, but their statement must include the same details as we have in our letter. Incorporated Indigenous Corporations who wish to provide their own letter must use their letterhead and include their Indigenous Corporation Number.

If you choose to use our letter, please note:

  • incorporated organisations need to complete all sections except for D
  • unincorporated organisations and community Elders need to complete all sections except for B

Statutory declarations

If you were unable to obtain a letter from an Indigenous organisation, you needed to provide us with 2 statutory declarations confirming your heritage. These include:

These statutory declarations must include a statement confirming that you:

  • are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent
  • identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander or both, and
  • are recognised by your community as a person who is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander

Consent Statement

If you apply under the Special Measures provision, you will be asked to complete a consent statement.

The purpose of the Consent Statement is to seek your approval to the department storing and using the confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage to determine your eligibility for any future special measures vacancies that you apply for in the department.

This means that you will not have to submit your confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage documentation again if you apply for any other special measures opportunities in the Australian Government in the future.

You can revoke your consent at any time by advising us.

A more detailed explanation is provided during the application process.

Successful applicants

If you are a successful applicant you will be placed in positions suitable to your capabilities and skills sets. It does not mean you will be restricted to positions that work with Indigenous Australians or working on Indigenous affairs.
