National Graduate Program requirements

We offer university graduates an entry level opportunity to start their career with us.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible to apply for the National Graduate Program, you must:

  • be an Australian citizen on 26 April 2017
  • be willing to relocate if required, and
  • have completed a minimum of an Australian recognised undergraduate or postgraduate degree on or since 3 April 2014,you can apply while you’re still studying as long as you will have completed your last day of study by the time the program starts

Skill requirements

Successful applicants will demonstrate:

  • proven initiative
  • ethical, adaptive and evidence-based judgement
  • strong problem solving skills
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • the ability to establish positive working relationships with team members and stakeholders, and
  • support for a workplace culture that values diversity, respect and inclusion

In addition, Professional pathway applicants will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of contemporary issues and practices related to their professional area of expertise or technical discipline.

Degree requirements

There are essential degree requirements for each discipline within the Professional pathway.

To participate in the Professional pathway you must have a degree in either:

Allied health, such as a degree in:

  • exercise physiology
  • nursing
  • occupational therapy
  • physiotherapy
  • psychology
  • rehabilitation counselling, or
  • social work

You also must demonstrate eligibility to gain registration with the professional health or allied health registration body, or for professional disciplines without registration requirements, the professional association relevant to your degree. These could include the Australian Health Practitioner Regulatory Agency (APHRA), Australian Society of Rehabilitation Counselors (ASORC), Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) or the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).   

Communication, such as a degree in:

  • advertising
  • digital media
  • journalism
  • media and public affairs
  • media arts
  • multimedia
  • public relations, or
  • web design

Data Analytics, such as a degree in:

  • applied science
  • business architecture
  • computer science
  • database and data modelling
  • engineering
  • information management
  • maths
  • programming
  • social science and social research
  • statistics, or
  • any areas of data science and analytics, economics and finance, and business studies

Finance, such as a degree in:

  • accounting
  • commerce majoring in accounting or finance
  • economics
  • finance, or
  • statistics

Membership or associate membership of a recognised professional accounting body, such as CA or CPA would be an advantage but is not mandatory.

Human resources, such as a degree in:

  • arts with a major in human resources
  • business with a major in human resources
  • commerce with a major in human resources
  • human resource management
  • management with a major in human resources

Law, such as a degree in:

  • Bachelor of Laws, or
  • Juris Doctor

You must also have completed, or must be willing to complete, a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice or equivalent.

Overseas students

If you obtained your degree at an overseas university, you will need to have it recognised by the Department of Education and Training, formally National Office for Overseas Skills Recognition.

Relocation to Canberra

The majority of positions for the graduate program are based in Canberra. Before you apply for the program you need to be willing to relocate to Canberra.

Opportunities to complete the program in areas outside Canberra are limited and vary each year subject to our business requirements.
