ABSTUDY School Fees Allowance (Group 2)

Helps with the cost of school fees for students getting ABSTUDY Schooling B, or eligible parents and guardians getting ABSTUDY Schooling A.

Who can get it

We pay School Fees Allowance (Group 2) if you’re a student, parent or guardian and meet one of the following criteria.

If you’re a student

You can get School Fees Allowance (Group 2) if you’re getting ABSTUDY Schooling B while studying at a secondary school and you’re:

If you’re a parent or guardian

You can get School Fees Allowance (Group 2) if you’re getting ABSTUDY Schooling A for your child who lives at home, if:

How much you can get

There are 2 different parts of School Fees Allowance (Group 2):

  • an annual part that isn’t income tested, and
  • an extra annual part that is income tested
Part Maximum rate of School Fees Allowance (Group 2)
Non income tested part $8,095
Income tested part $2,322

Income tested means your, your parents’ or your partner’s income may affect how much you get.

If eligible, we’ll pay both parts.

The maximum rates are the most School Fees Allowance we pay. If your fees are less than the maximum rate, you or your school will get enough to pay your fees.

Schools tell us their annual school fee rates each year. Some schools may charge different fees for each student. If yours does, tell us what your fees are when you claim ABSTUDY Schooling A or ABSTUDY Schooling B.

How we pay the allowance

We normally pay School Fees Allowance to the school unless you choose to pay the fees yourself.

If you choose to pay the fees yourself, we pay School Fees Allowance to you after you’ve given us proof of payment.

If you’re boarding

If you’re boarding and we pay School Fees Allowance (Group 2) to your school, we pay it based on where you’re boarding. You could be in:

If you’re boarding at a boarding school or a hostel that’s signatory to the Standard Hostels Agreement

We calculate a daily rate of School Fees Allowance (Group 2) and pay it as a lump sum at the beginning of each term.

Sometimes school fee charges are less than the rate of School Fees Allowance you’re eligible for. We’ll pay the unused School Fees Allowance to your school to meet any outstanding boarding costs.

If you live in a hostel that’s NOT signatory to the Standard Hostels Agreement or in a private board arrangement

We pay your School Fees Allowance (Group 2) in 1 instalment when you start school.
