Adult Migrant English Program

Provides free English language courses, if you are eligible, to help you settle in Australia.

About the program

If you are eligible to participate in the program, you will have access to up to 510 hours of free English language education. This will be for either 5 years from your visa start date or until you understand functional English, whichever comes first.

Eligibility

You may be eligible to participate in the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) if:

  • you have little or no English
  • you are aged: 
    • 18 years or older, or
    • 15 to 17 years old and you are not attending school
  • you are a permanent resident or hold an eligible temporary visa

There is a list of eligible temporary visas on the Department of Education and Training website.

Timeframes

To participate in the program you must meet timeframes for registration, commencement and completion of your course. The time limits below apply from your visa start date, or from the date you arrived in Australia, whichever is later.

If you are 18 years or older you must:

  • register with an AMEP provider within 6 months
  • start your course within 12 months
  • complete your course within 5 years

If you are younger than 18 years you must:

  • register with an AMEP provider within 12 months
  • start your course within 12 months
  • complete your course within 5 years

Use the Department of Education and Training website to find an Adult Migrant English Program service provider located near you.

Courses are held at over 250 locations across Australia.

Child care assistance

If you have children under school age who need child care while you attend your class, your AMEP service provider may be able to arrange free child care.

If your children are school age, you may be eligible for Jobs, Education and Training Child Care Fee Assistance.
