Adult Migrant English Program

The program provides free English language courses to help you settle in Australia.

About the program

If eligible, you can get up to 510 hours of free English language education. You can access the program for 5 years from your visa start date or until you understand functional English, whichever comes first.

Eligibility

You may join the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) if:

  • you speak little or no English
  • you're: 
    • 18 years or older, or
    • 15 to 17 years and not attending school
  • you're a permanent resident or hold an eligible temporary visa

Timeframes

To join the program you must register, start and finish your course in the time limits below. The limits apply from your visa start date or from the date you arrived in Australia, whichever is later.

If you're 18 years or older you must:

  • register with an AMEP provider within 6 months
  • start your course within 12 months, and
  • complete your course within 5 years

If you're younger than 18 years you must:

  • register with an AMEP provider within 12 months
  • start your course within 12 months, and
  • complete your course within 5 years

There are over 250 course locations across Australia.

Child care assistance

If you have children under school age, you may get free child care while you attend class. Your AMEP service provider may arrange this.

If your children are school age, you may get Jobs, Education and Training Child Care Fee Assistance.
