Annual parental income test reassessment

If you're dependent and you get Youth Allowance or ABSTUDY, we may need your parents’ or guardians’ income details each year.

The parental income test for Youth Allowance and the parental income test for ABSTUDY look at parental income for the last financial year. We reassess parental income each year so you get paid the right amount.

You’ll get a letter from us in September or early October if we need your parents or guardians to complete this reassessment.

If your parents or guardians need to complete the reassessment and don't do this before 1 January each year, we’ll stop your:

  • Youth Allowance
  • ABSTUDY Living Allowance, or
  • ABSTUDY School Fees Allowance Group 2 payment

You may also miss out on extra services or payments.

Completing the annual reassessment

Your parents can complete the reassessment online.

Instructions for parents

If you get Family Tax Benefit for other children, you still need to complete this reassessment for your dependent child getting:

  • Youth Allowance
  • ABSTUDY Living Allowance, or
  • School Fees Allowance Group 2

Before you start, you need your dependent child's:

  • Customer Reference Number (CRN)
  • name and date of birth

It helps to have the One Time Access Code from the letter we sent your child.

Make sure you have your income details ready before you start the reassessment, as you need to complete this process in one sitting.

Your income includes:

  • combined taxable income
  • fringe benefits
  • income from outside Australia
  • reportable superannuation contributions, and
  • net investment losses, including negative gearing for property and shares

If you have your tax notice of assessment, you still need to complete the reassessment online.

To do the reassessment:

  1. go to the Advise Parental Income online service
  2. select Provide details for a reassessment of your dependent child's Youth Allowance or ABSTUDY payment
  3. select Next
  4. select Yes if you have a One Time Access Code. Then select Start now. If you don't have a One Time Access Code, select No and skip to step 7
  5. enter your dependent child's CRN
  6. enter your One Time Access Code, then select Continue
  7. complete the questions

If your parents or guardians haven't lodged their tax return

If your parents or guardians haven't lodged their 2015-16 tax return, they can give an estimate of their taxable income. They still need to complete the reassessment online. Once they lodge their tax return and get their notice of assessment, you need to give us a copy within 21 days from the date of issue on the notice. You can submit this document online.

If your parents' or guardians' income increases

If your parents' or guardians' income goes up:

  • more than 25% in a year, your payment may be reduced from 1 October of that year
  • 25% or less, your payment may be reduced from 1 January the next year
