Claiming ABSTUDY

To get ABSTUDY, you need to claim over the phone or with printed forms by the closing date.

How to claim

Phone claims

You can claim over the phone by calling us on Freecall™ 1800 132 317.

But, we can’t process claims for Lawful Custody Allowance or Testing and Assessment assistance over the phone. You can fill in the claim forms below.

If you can’t claim over the phone, you can fill in a claim form. Check which form best suits your circumstances or those of the person you are claiming for.

  • Secondary student 15 or younger and living at home, or
  • Primary school student 14 or older on 1 January that school year and living at home

  • Secondary school student from a remote area who needs to live away from home for school

  • Full time student or Australian Apprentice who only wants to claim Incidentals Allowance, or
  • Attending tests or assessments for entry into a tertiary course or the Indigenous Youth Mobility Program

When you claim, we might ask you to fill in some extra forms. These will help us to accurately assess your claim and understand all the circumstances.

If we ask you for these, you need to submit them within 14 days together with your confirmation of identity, if needed.

Closing dates

There are different closing dates for ABSTUDY claims, depending on your situation.

We can’t make ABSTUDY payments if we receive your claim after the closing date. If you can’t meet the closing date you must call us on Freecall™ 1800 132 317 to register your intent to claim.

If you couldn’t submit your claim because of an extreme circumstance, you must give proof of this.

Students

Circumstances Closing date
Full year course - more than 30 weeks including vacations 31 December in the year of study
Part year or short course - 30 weeks or less including vacations the last day of the course

If you can’t meet the closing date, you must call us and register your intent to claim. You must submit your completed claim within 13 weeks of the date you called.

Students claiming ABSTUDY Pensioner Education Supplement (PES)

Circumstances Closing date
Full year course - more than 30 weeks including vacations 31 March in the year of study
Course that starts in second semester 31 July in the year of study
Course that is less than 1 year 28 days after the date you start the course
You start receiving a qualifying pension or payment for ABSTUDY PES 28 days after the date you start receiving the payment

If you can’t meet the closing date, you must call us and register your intent to claim. You must submit your completed claim within 13 weeks of the date you called.

Australian Apprentices

You must submit your completed claim by the start date of your apprenticeship. If you can’t, you must call us and register your intent to claim. You must submit your completed claim within 2 weeks of the date you called.

If a medical condition or special circumstances stop you from doing so, call us on Freecall™ 1800 132 317. We may be able to extend the date and you may be able to submit within 13 weeks.

Students or education providers claiming ABSTUDY Away from Base assistance

Circumstances Closing date
Student requesting an advance payment of travel allowance 3 weeks before the activity
Student applying for reimbursement 31 March in the year after study
Education provider requesting advance payment or approval for reimbursement for a student or students who are eligible for ABSTUDY 6 weeks before the activity
Education provider requesting bulk funding in advance 6 weeks before the first residential school day of the year

Student in lawful custody

You must submit your claim and all your receipts by 31 March in the year immediately after the year of study to be reimbursed for essential course costs.

If you can’t meet the closing date, you must call us and register your intent to claim. You must submit your completed claim and all your receipts within 13 weeks of the date you called.

Australian Apprentice in lawful custody

You must submit your claim and all your receipts by 31 March in the year immediately after the year of study to be reimbursed for essential course costs.

If you can’t meet the closing date, you must call us and register your intent to claim. You must submit your completed claim within 2 weeks of the date you called.

Claim outcome

After we assess your claim, we will send you a letter to let you know whether you will get ABSTUDY. If your claim was successful, the letter will tell you when your payment will start and how much you will be paid.

You can view, save and print your letters in your online account.

You always have the right to appeal any decision we make.
