Claiming Child Care Benefit
You should submit your claim for Child Care Benefit to us as soon as possible, so that you can be paid from the earliest possible date.
Before you start
Check if you are eligible for this payment before you start your claim.
How you claim depends on the type of child care you use.
You also need to decide how you wish to receive your payment.
Claiming for approved care
You can claim Child Care Benefit for approved care in a number of ways.
We will automatically assess your eligibility for Child Care Rebate when your claim for Child Care Benefit for approved care is assessed.
You can claim Child Care Benefit for approved care as reduced fees or as an annual lump sum payment online.
Claiming online is secure, convenient and easy. Once you have completed your claim, you can provide supporting documents online or bring them to a service centre within 14 days.
If you do not have a Centrelink online account
If you have a Customer Reference Number (CRN) you can complete your registration now.
If you do not have a CRN you will receive a Customer Access Number (CAN) to get you started.
Express Plus Centrelink mobile app
If you are already receiving Family Tax Benefit for a child, you can claim Child Care Benefit for approved care as reduced fees using the Express Plus Centrelink mobile app.
If you are already receiving Family Tax Benefit for a child, you can claim Child Care Benefit for approved care as reduced fees by calling us on 136 150.
By post or in person
You can claim Child Care Benefit for approved care by completing the:
- Claim for Approved Child Care payments form, if you want to receive Child Care Benefit for approved care as reduced fees, or
- Claim for approved Child Care Payments-an annual lump-sum payment of Child Care Benefit, and read the information booklet if you want to receive Child Care Benefit for approved care as an annual lump sum payment
- Registration for formal enrolment - for families claiming Child Care Benefit as a lump sum payment form for families intending to claim Child Care Benefit as a lump sum payment – this will enable child care providers to send attendance during the year before families submit their lump sum claim
Claiming for registered care
To claim Child Care Benefit for registered care you need to complete the Claim for Child Care Benefit for registered care form.
Acceptable receipts for the care must be provided each time you claim. Claims can be made up to 1 year after the care was provided.
Submit your claim
Submit your completed claim form online, through the app, by phone or post or to your nearest service centre with the supporting documentation.
After submitting your claim, you will need to provide any other supporting documents requested within 14 days.
There are time limits for lodging lump sum claims.

We will inform you of the outcome of your claim. If you are eligible for Child Care Benefit for approved care, we will tell you when your payment will start and your entitlement.
