Claiming the Ex-carer Allowance (Child) Health Care Card

To claim the Ex-Carer Allowance (Child) Health Care Card, you should register an intent to claim.

Before you start

Check if you are eligible and read the Information you need to know about your claim for Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, Low Income Health Care Card, Foster Child Health Care Card, Ex-Carer Allowance (Child) Health Care Card form before you start.

Intent to claim

Register an intent to claim to let us know you will be applying soon if you are using a paper claim form. An intent to claim will be automatically registered if you make an online claim for the Ex-carer Allowance (Child) Health Care Card.

If you want to claim the Ex-carer Allowance (Child) Health Care Card using a paper claim form, register your intent to claim:

  • online, by selecting either Request a service for yourself or Request a service for someone you know on the Request a Service option
  • by calling the Carers line, or
  • in person, at a service centre

You will then be sent a claim form in the mail. Once you have registered your intent to claim, the claim should be submitted within 14 days. This will help you get a card at the earliest possible date, if you qualified at the time of registration.

To do your business online, you need a myGov account and a Centrelink online account.

If you’ve been a Centrelink customer before

You’ll have a Customer Reference Number. Use this to register for an online account.

This is anyone who’s had a payment or concession from us before, no matter how long ago.

If you haven’t been a Centrelink customer before

Visit a service centre and tell us you want to register for an online account. You’ll need to bring photo ID with you.

This is anyone who’s never had a payment or concession from us before.

If you are unable to claim online

If you are unable to claim online, for example you do not have access to the internet you can claim Ex-carer Allowance (Child) Health Care Card by form.

By form

Once you have registered your intent to claim we will send you a claim form in the mail. You can also print out the Application for a Health Care Card for former recipients of a Carer Allowance Health Card form.

Supporting documents

You may need to provide some other documents to support your claim. We will let you know if there are any other documents we need.

Confirmation of identity may be required and need to be presented at a service centre within 14 days.

Submit your claim

Online

If you are claiming online, you can submit your claim and most supporting documents electronically at the end of the process. Read more about submitting your documents online.

By form

Submit your form and supporting documents by post or in person at a service centre within 14 days.

Claim outcome

If your claim is successful, your Ex-Carer Allowance (Child) Health Care Card will be sent to you in the mail.

Your card is valid for 12 months from the date you submitted your claim.

A month before your card is due to expire, we will send you a letter asking you to contact us if you are still a full time student and want to reapply.

The card is issued in your name only.
