Claiming Family Tax Benefit

To get Family Tax Benefit, you must lodge a claim with us. You can lodge your claim online or use printed forms.

Before you start

Check if you are eligible for this payment.

It will help to have the following information handy before you start your claim for Family Tax Benefit (FTB):

  • your family’s income details - that is, combined estimates for the current financial year. For FTB for a past financial year, combined actual income for that year
  • your passport number, if applicable
  • the date you first arrived in Australia, if you were not born in Australia
  • details of periods you or your child were outside Australia, if applicable
  • your partner’s residence details
  • details about your child, including:
    • name
    • date of birth
    • details of previous carer, if applicable
    • details of shared care arrangements, if applicable
    • details of child support received, if applicable, and
    • proof of birth or entry into care, if not already established
  • your bank account details - the account must be in your name or a joint account; it cannot be in a child’s name unless you are the signatory or trustee
  • tax file numbers for you and your partner

Payment options

You can choose to receive FTB either by fortnightly instalments or as an annual lump sum.

Fortnightly payments

You will need to submit a claim online.

You will also need to:

  • estimate your income throughout the year, and
  • make sure you and your partner lodge tax returns within 12 months of the end of the financial year and have the Australian Taxation Office confirm the income for you and your partner, or
  • tell us that you are not required to lodge a tax return within the required timeframe

An annual lump sum payment

You will need to submit a claim online.

You will also need to:

  • make sure you and your partner lodge tax returns within 12 months of the end of the financial year and have the Australian Taxation Office confirm your income for you and your partner, or
  • tell us that you are not required to lodge a tax return within the required timeframe

You must keep accurate records when claiming FTB as a lump sum. You need to keep records about changes to shared care arrangements and changes in your personal circumstances.

If you choose this option, you need to submit a claim for every year that you want to claim FTB.

Claiming options

Online

Our online services are a secure, convenient and easy way to start a claim for FTB. Once you have completed your claim online, bring the supporting documents requested on the claim form to a service centre within 14 days.

From early 2016, myGov will be the only way you can access your Centrelink online account. Start using myGov now to access your government services online, all in one place.

If you already have a Centrelink online account

You can log on to Centrelink online account through myGov using your Customer Reference Number (CRN) and password. Select ‘Apply for a Payment’ then ‘Make a Claim’ from the menu to start your claim.

If you do not have a Centrelink online account

If you have a Customer Reference Number (CRN), you can complete your registration now.

If you do not have a CRN, you will receive a Customer Access Number (CAN) to get you started.

Register

In person

You can make a claim for FTB by completing a Notes and Claim for Paid Parental Leave and Family Assistance form.

You can make a claim for FTB as an annual lump sum payment by completing a Claim for an annual lump sum payment of FTB for the 2014–15 financial year form.

If you do not have access to a printer, you can pick up the form from your nearest service centre or call us on 136 150 and we can send it to you.

Supporting documentation

You will need to provide:

  • proof of the birth of your child if not already established with us, and
  • your income details

If we require any other documents, we will notify you. We will tell you at the end of the process if you need to provide any verification documents such as identity documents.

Submit claim

You can submit your claim for FTB as early as 3 months before your child is born or enters your care.

If you begin your claim online, you will need to provide us with your supporting documentation within 14 days.

You may be able to submit your supporting documentation via the Document Lodgement Service online or via the Centrelink Express Plus app, or visit your nearest service centre. We will need these documents before we can finalise your claim.

Claim outcome

We will inform you whether your claim is successful. If you are eligible for FTB, we will tell you when your payment will start and how much you will be paid.
