Claiming Fares Allowance

Fares Allowance can be paid after you’ve made the journey or you can ask us to pre-book your travel for you.

Pre-booked travel

If you’re travelling by air, ferry, train or coach, we may be able to pre-book and pay for your travel directly with a commercial operator. If there’s additional expenses which cannot be pre-booked, such as a local bus, you’ll need to make your own arrangements and claim reimbursement after you’ve completed your trip.

If you’re requesting pre-brooked travel, submit your claim no later than 7 days before your travel.

Example

Elizabeth is receiving Youth Allowance as a dependent student and lives in Sydney to attend university. Her permanent home is in Perth. Elizabeth wants to travel home to see her parents at the end-of-year break, returning to university in the new year. Elizabeth can ask us to book and pay for the most practical mode of transport to travel, for example, return flights from Sydney to Perth.

Elizabeth catches the local bus to and from the airport which cannot be pre-booked. She’ll need to submit her bus travel expenses for reimbursement after she has travelled.
