Create a myGov account

myGov is a simple and secure way to access a range of Australian Government services online.

myGov is a simple and secure way to access a range of Australian Government services online with one username and one password, all from one secure location. Once you have created your myGov account, you can choose to link services such as Medicare, Centrelink, Child Support and the Australian Taxation Office.

If you already have a myGov username use that to sign in.

Step 1: Create a myGov account

To create a myGov account, go to and select Create a myGov account.


Step 2: Email address

Enter your email address in the area provided.

You may need to use an alternative email address if you share an email address and it is already being used for another myGov account. This is because myGov assigns one username to each email address.

Read and accept the myGov terms of use by ticking the box, then select Next.


Step 3: Confirmation code

A confirmation code will be sent to your email address. Enter the code in the area provided, then select Next.

Tip: The code is case sensitive.


Step 4: Set up your account

Enter the information requested to set up your account.

Your password must be at least seven characters long and include at least one number.

For further security, you need to set up 3 secret questions and answers. You can make up your own questions or select from the suggested list, then select Next.


Step 5: myGov username

Your myGov account has now been created and your username has been emailed to you. Write it down and keep it safe.

Select Next to set up your inbox notification preferences.


Step 6: myGov security codes

We recommend you register your mobile phone number so you can receive myGov security codes to sign in to your account.

The security code is a time limited code that is delivered via SMS to enhance the security of your myGov account.

You must have your mobile phone with you as a secuirty code will be sent to you to set up this function.

Tip: Enter the security code as it appears on your SMS, including upper and lower case characters.


Firstly answer one of the secret questions you have previously set up, then select Next.


Enter your mobile phone number, then select Get Code.


Enter the security code as it appears on your mobile, then select Next.


Step 7: myGov inbox

When you create a myGov account, you automatically get access to your myGov Inbox. You can receive, view, print and save mail from Medicare, the Australian Taxation Office, Centrelink and Child Support.

You can choose to be notified by SMS or email when you receive you mail in your myGov inbox.

Choose your preference, then select Continue to access your myGov account.


Step 8: myGov home

Your myGov account is now created and you can start linking your government services.

For your privacy and security, ensure you sign out once you have finished using your myGov account.
