Eligibility for Schoolkids Bonus

You must have been a parent or carer of a primary or secondary school student, or a young person receiving eligible income support payments.

Schoolkids Bonus has been phased out, which includes the School Leaver payment. The final instalments of Schoolkids Bonus were paid in January and July 2016. If you were eligible and didn’t get them, we might be able to pay you if you let us know in time.

Eligible families

To be eligible, you must have been a parent or carer getting Family Tax Benefit Part A for a dependent child. The child must have been attending primary or secondary education.

You could have received Schoolkids Bonus if your child was completing home schooling, overseas study or special education.

You also had to meet an income test.

Eligible students

Schoolkids Bonus was paid to primary and secondary students if they met the income test, and were:

  • younger than or turning 19 years of age in the calendar year, and
  • receiving:
    • Youth Allowance
    • ABSTUDY Living Allowance
    • Disability Support Pension
    • Carer Payment
    • Parenting Payment, or
    • Special Benefit

Schoolkids Bonus was paid to secondary students receiving Pensioner Education Supplement if they met the income test and were:

  • younger than or turning 19 years of age in the calendar year, and
  • receiving:
    • Disability Support Pension
    • Carer Payment
    • Parenting Payment, or
    • Special Benefit

Income test

Eligible families and young people with an annual adjusted taxable income of $100,000 or less were paid Schoolkids Bonus.

Eligibility was based on income information you've already given us.

Some people were exempt from the income test, such as people getting Special Benefit, certain veterans’ education allowance payments or Disability Support Pension for those who are permanently blind.

The exemption from the income test for Special Benefit and Disability Support Pension applied only where the student got Schoolkids Bonus in their own right. Families who got Schoolkids Bonus because they got Family Tax Benefit Part A for a dependent child were not exempt.

Department of Veterans' Affairs

Families and students were eligible for Schoolkids Bonus if they got an education allowance from the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA).

In these cases, the DVA paid Schoolkids Bonus for the child. To find out more, call 133 254 or, for non-metropolitan callers, call 1800 555 254.
