Employment Services Assessments

If you have a disability, illness, injury or other barriers to work, we may refer you for an Employment Services Assessment.

Assessing your ability to work

The assessment helps us to understand your ability to work and the best employment services program for your circumstances.

We may also refer you for an assessment to see if you can get the Youth Disability Supplement.

A qualified health or allied health professional we employ completes the assessment. There is no charge for this service.

The assessor will consider medical evidence you provide. They may contact your treating health professional to clarify information about your condition.

This assessment helps us understand:

  • how your condition affects your ability to work
  • if you have a reduced work capacity

Allow up to an hour for your assessment.

Your appointment

If you need to attend an assessment, we’ll contact you to make an appointment.

Most appointments are in person at a service centre. In some cases, your appointment may be by phone or video conference.

If you don’t attend your appointment we may stop your payment.

If you can’t attend your appointment, call us on the phone number we give you when we make the appointment.

Contact us before your appointment if you:

  • are finding it hard to attend, for example, because of mobility issues, or
  • have any special needs, for example, you prefer an assessor of a particular gender to interview you because of your cultural or religious beliefs

What to bring

When you attend your appointment bring:

  • any new medical evidence you’ve not already given us
  • aids, equipment or assistive technology you use, such as hearing or visual aids
  • a relative, friend or an advocate for support, if you want

At your appointment

The assessor will talk to you about:

  • your conditions and medical evidence
  • any barriers to work you may have
  • any recent assistance or rehabilitation you’ve had, and
  • services to help you find and keep a job, if needed

After your assessment

The assessor will write a report about how your condition affects your ability to work. If they need to, they will refer you to an employment services provider. Employment services providers can help you prepare for, find and keep work. Where possible, the assessor will give you details about this referral at your appointment.

Tell us if you want a copy of your report. We can usually give you one. In some circumstances you’ll need to make a formal Freedom of Information request.

Your privacy

You have the right to have your personal information kept private. The assessor must protect your privacy and keep your information safe.
