Liquid assets waiting period

The liquid assets waiting period is between 1 and 13 weeks.

It applies if you have funds equal to or more than:

  • $5,500 if you’re single with no dependants, or
  • $11,000 if have a partner or you’re single with dependants

Liquid assets are any funds readily available to you or your partner. This includes money your employer owes you.

Exemptions or waivers

We may waive the liquid assets waiting period if you’re experiencing severe financial hardship because of unavoidable or reasonable expenses.

You may be exempt if:

  • you or your partner have been subject to a liquid assets waiting period that started within the last 12 months
  • you transfer from one payment to another within a 14 day period
  • you qualified for Newstart Allowance after getting another payment, or
  • you’re:
    • in a rehabilitation program
    • doing a Stream C activity with your Employment Services Provider, or
    • doing an activity undertaken as part of the Community Development Programme
