Liquid assets waiting period

The liquid assets waiting period is between 1 and 13 weeks and applies if you have funds that are equal to or more than:

  • $5,500 if you are single with no dependants, or
  • $11,000 if you are partnered or single with dependants

Liquid assets are any funds that are readily available to you or your partner, including money your employer owes you.

Exemptions or waivers

The liquid assets waiting period may be waived if you’re experiencing severe financial hardship as a result of unavoidable or reasonable expenses.

You may be exempt if:

  • you or your partner have been subject to a liquid assets waiting period that started within the last 12 months
  • you transfer from one payment to another within a 14 day period
  • you became qualified for Newstart Allowance after receiving another payment, or
  • you are undertaking:
    • a rehabilitation program
    • a Stream C activity with your Employment Services Provider, or
    • an approved work or study program, such as the Department of Employment New Enterprise Incentive Scheme
