Paying child support when you live overseas
If you live overseas excluding New Zealand, and pay child support through us to a parent who lives in Australia under an Australian assessment you need to provide us with details of your overseas income.
If you live overseas excluding New Zealand, and pay child support through us to a parent who lives in Australia under an Australian assessment, you need to provide us with details of your overseas income.
When you provide us with your overseas income you need to include:
- your income in the foreign currency that you were paid, not in Australian dollars
- the income you earned during the overseas financial year, not in the Australian financial year
- documentary evidence of that income
You can declare this information by:
- completing the Income declaration – overseas income form (CS4145)
- calling us on +61 131 272 or +61 3 6216 0864 (international call charges apply). We will apply an appropriate exchange rate to convert foreign income into Australian dollars.
If you do not provide income information and you live in a reciprocating jurisdiction, we may ask for information about your income from an overseas authority.
Child support assessments are reviewed regularly to make sure the amount payable reflects the circumstances of both parents.
If we do not have your correct income you may end up paying the wrong amount of child support and you may build up a child support debt.
When you make payments for your children to us, the amounts will be credited against your child support account. We transfer them to the receiving parent electronically in most cases.
There are a number of ways to make payments from overseas.
Easypay - credit or debit card
If payments are made through us, the most convenient way for you to pay is by credit or debit card through Australian Government EasyPay. It is fully automated, secure and available 24 hours a day. This service will incur a card payment fee.
Post a cheque or bank draft payable to ‘Department of Human Services—Child Support’. Include your 16 digit payment reference number and send it to:

We pay the cost of converting overseas currency into Australian dollars. Please note that fluctuating currencies can affect the amount of payment received in Australian dollars and you need to adjust your payments accordingly. Allow up to 25 working days for funds to be cleared from your nominated bank account.
Transfer money from your overseas bank to Australia. It is a safe and convenient way of making payments, with a record of each transfer shown on your bank statement. Payments should be transferred to:

Telegraphic transfer can be more expensive than international drafts because your bank will charge a fee to send each payment and an additional $20 processing fee once payments are received in Australia. These fees are not charged by us or the Reserve Bank of Australia—they are from a third party associated with your bank for processing incoming payments.
If you do not make your payments
If you do not pay your child support, we may refer your case to the authorities in your country to collect child support from you. Collection methods will depend on the laws of your country and the processes applied by the relevant authorities.
