Payment rates for Relocation Scholarship

Payment rates are different depending on where you live and what year of study you are in.

If your family home is in a regional or remote area, the scholarship amount is:

  • $4,333 in the first year you need to live away from home to study in an approved scholarship course
  • $2,167 in the second or third year
  • $1,083 in the fourth or subsequent year

If your family home is not in a regional or remote area but your place of study is, your payment is:

  • $4,333 in the first year you need to live away from home to study in an approved scholarship course
  • $1,083 for all subsequent years

If both your family home and place of study are in areas that are classified as a major city you are not eligible for the Relocation Scholarship. This applies even if your family home and your study location are in different cities.

You can find out if your family home or place of study is in a regional or remote area by using the Student Regional Area Search service.

Payment details

The Relocation Scholarship is paid once a year.

It will not be paid until you meet all the eligibility criteria and are eligible for at least $1 of Youth Allowance or ABSTUDY Living Allowance on your payday.

If you are receiving the Relocation Scholarship for the first time you will be paid with your first regular payment after you become eligible for the scholarship.

It does not matter what time of year you first become eligible for the scholarship. As long as there are at least 35 days before the end of your course the scholarship will be paid with your first eligible regular payment.

If you received a Relocation Scholarship in the previous year, and you are still eligible, the Relocation Scholarship will be paid with your first regular payment after 21 February.

If you don’t receive at least $1 of Youth Allowance or ABSTUDY Living Allowance on the payday in question, we will continue to assess your eligibility each fortnight and if you are eligible, the scholarship will be paid with your regular payment in the first fortnight that you receive at least $1 of Youth Allowance or ABSTUDY.

The Relocation Scholarship will not show up in your online account or in the app until it has been paid.

Example

Student becomes eligible for scholarship after 21 February

Stan is studying at a regional university and living at home with his parents. In August, his parents move to another regional town and Stan moves to on campus accommodation to continue his studies.

He is now eligible for the away from home rate of Youth Allowance and because he still has 2 years of study left in his degree he will satisfy the requirement to be undertaking full time study on the 35th day after qualifying for a Relocation Scholarship.

As long as he receives at least $1 of Youth Allowance on his next normal payday after qualifying for the scholarship, Stan will receive a scholarship payment at the same time.

If he is not eligible for at least $1 on that payday, Centrelink will keep checking his scholarship eligibility and will pay it on the first normal payday when Stan receives at least $1 of Youth Allowance.
