Report Employment Income for students using your Centrelink online account

If you are a student in receipt of Youth Allowance, Austudy or ABSTUDY you need to report any income you receive from employment each fortnight.

This guide outlines reporting employment income for students. If you’re not a student, learn how to report employment income and job plan requirements

You need to report on or after your reporting date, you cannot report early. You need to report by 5 pm on your reporting date to prevent any delays in your payment.

You are also required to advise of any income earned by your partner, even if they are not receiving a payment from us.

Read from Step 8 if you’re reporting overdue employment income.

Step 1: Sign in

Once you have signed into myGov and selected your Centrelink online account, select Report employment income.

If you’ve recently been granted a student payment and are reporting overdue employment income go to Step 8.

Step 2: Reporting page

Your reporting period and a list of you and your partner’s most recent employers will be displayed.

Step 3: Select or add employer

If the employer you have worked for in the reporting period is listed, select the pencil icon and go to Step 4.

You can tell us your employer by using their 11 digit Australian Business Number (ABN) or their business name.

You can:

  • enter their ABN and select Find, or
  • enter your employer’s business name and select Add

You only need to tell us the employer’s details the first time you report you earned income from them.

Step 4: Reporting your employment income

Enter your gross income amount from the employer for the reporting period. This is the amount you earned before tax.

Enter your worked hours, to the nearest hour for your reporting period.

If you and your partner earned income from multiple employers during your reporting period, ensure you report the income for each employer.

Go to Step 3 to learn how to select or add another employer.

Select Done, once you have entered your and your partner’s income for each employer.

Your total income will be displayed in the My earned income section. If you have reported your partner’s income their total will also be displayed in the Partner earned income section.

A summary of the information you have entered will be displayed. If the details are correct, select Submit. Go to Step 5.

If the details you have entered are incorrect, review and update the information in the My earned income sections and repeat this step.

Step 5: Declaration

Check the income details you have provided and read the declaration.

Select Cancel, if the details are incorrect.

If the details are correct and you understand the declaration, select Accept Declaration and Submit to submit your report.

Step 6: Receipt page

A receipt number is provided to let you know that your report has been successful; please make a note of this for your records.

Your receipt will include you and your partner’s:

  • next payment
  • next reporting dates, and
  • any upcoming appointments or documents are to be returned

Step 7: Return to home

This is the end of the reporting process.

Select Return to home to return to your online account home page and go to Step 13.

Step 8: Overdue Reporting

You have 14 days to complete any overdue reports after you have been granted a student payment.

A list of you and your partner’s employers will display. You would have given us this information as part of your claim for a student payment.

If you have multiple overdue reports, you will need to complete each one separately.

Step 9: Select or add employer

If you or your partner earned income during the overdue reporting period and they’re listed, select the pencil icon next to their name and go to Step 10.

  • enter your employer’s business name and select Add

Step 10: Report your employment income

Enter your gross income amount from the employer for the reporting period. This is the amount you earned before tax.

Go to Step 9 to select or add another employer.

Select Done, once you have entered your and your partner’s income for each employer.

Your total income will be displayed in the My earned income section. If you have reported your partner’s income their total will also be displayed in the Partner earned income section.

A summary of you and your partner’s income will be displayed. Read this information carefully to ensure the details are correct.

Select Submit, if the summary is incorrect and go to Step 11.

If the details you have entered are incorrect, review and update the information in the My earned income sections and go to Step 8.

Step 11: Declaration

A final summary of you and your partner’s income and your mutual obligation requirement declaration will display. Check these details and read the declaration.

Select Cancel, if the details are incorrect.

If the details are correct and you understand the declaration, select Accept Declaration and Submit to submit your report.

A receipt number is provided to let you know that your report has been successful; please make a note of this for your records.

Your receipt will include you and your partner’s:

  • next payment
  • next reporting dates, and
  • any upcoming appointments or documents are to be returned

Select Go to next report if you have income during the next reporting period, Go to Step 8 to report overdue income.

Select Home if you have finished reporting overdue income, and go to Step 13.

Once back at your online account homepage you can complete many other transactions as required or you can return to your myGov account
