Travel restrictions for ABSTUDY Fares Allowance

There are some travel restrictions for ABSTUDY Fares Allowance.

Overseas

ABSTUDY Fares Allowance is not available for travel overseas.

If you are approved to study overseas, you may get ABSTUDY Fares Allowance to travel within the other country. For example, if your family is posted to a remote area overseas.

Weekends

We will not approve weekend travel unless there are exceptional circumstances or a supervisor is travelling with you. We cannot support you if your travel is disrupted while travelling on weekends.

If your educational institution, boarding school or hostel requests weekend travel for you, they must provide a supervisor to travel with you if you are under 18 years of age. They must provide an emergency contact number for our travel management company. If your weekend travel is disrupted, your educational institution, boarding school or hostel and your parent or guardian must manage the disruption, including overnight accommodation and supervision.

Interstate

There are restrictions on interstate travel if you are:

  • a secondary school student, or
  • doing a Statement of Attainment, Certificate or Enabling course

Secondary school students

We do not normally approve interstate travel to attend a secondary school. Interstate travel will only be approved if:

  • you live near a state or territory border and your school is in a nearby interstate location
  • travel to an interstate school is cost effective
  • there are no boarding places in any boarding schools in your home state or territory
  • you have been approved to live away from home to complete an approved specialist course that is not available in your home state or territory
  • you have been awarded a scholarship to a Highly Effective or High Expectation School, or an Independent Boarding School scholarship at an interstate school, or
  • you were approved to live away from home at an interstate school and your situation has changed, but it is very important you continue at the interstate school

If you are considering studying interstate, call us on Freecall™ 1800 132 317 to discuss your eligibility for ABSTUDY Fares Allowance.

Statement of Attainment, Certificate or Enabling courses

We do not normally approve interstate travel to attend a Statement of Attainment, Certificate or Enabling course. Interstate travel will only be approved if:

  • it is cost effective
  • you are in the Indigenous Youth Mobility Program and have been offered a placement interstate, or
  • a similar course is not available in your home state or territory, and the educational institution has an exemption from this interstate travel rule from the Department of Social Services

If you are considering studying interstate, call us on Freecall™ 1800 132 317 to discuss your eligibility for ABSTUDY Fares Allowance.
