ABSTUDY Fares Allowance is available for different types of travel. Check the travel type conditions to see if you are eligible.

We will normally only approve travel between your permanent home and place of study. We will not normally pay for travel to another location, even if the trip is cheaper.

Travel type conditions

You need to meet the following conditions to be eligible for ABSTUDY Fares Allowance:

Start and end of studies

You may be eligible for assistance to travel between your home and place of study when you start study, and when you complete study for the year.

School holiday travel

You may be eligible for assistance for up to 3 return trips per year between your home and place of study for the school holidays.

You cannot use it for the Easter break, unless Easter falls over the school holiday period. It is not available for long weekends or when boarding schools or hostels close.

Travel for study of more than 1 semester

You may be eligible for assistance for 1 return trip between your home and place of study if you are studying a course longer than 1 semester. The trip can be any time after you have started your course and before the end of the study year.

Orientation or special purpose visits

You may be eligible for assistance for a return trip between your home and place of study:

  • to attend an interview before being accepted into a boarding school
  • if you are from a remote community and going away to board for the first time
  • if you are at risk of being suspended or expelled because you have not adjusted at the school and a visit from your parent, guardian or another person will help you, or
  • if you have completed secondary studies in the previous year and plan to study an approved tertiary course for at least 1 year

Compassionate travel

You may be eligible for assistance for up to 2 return trips between your home and place of study for reasons such as:

  • critical illness or injury of an immediate family member
  • you have an illness or injury that requires you to return home
  • the death or funeral of a family member, or
  • you live in a community that observes Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander lore or kinship obligations and you need to participate in a community event under these obligations

Usually you would travel home, but sometimes assistance is available for a close family member to visit you at your place of study.

Compassionate travel if you are expelled

You may be eligible for assistance to return home if you are expelled from secondary school. We can only pay for this travel in very specific circumstances and when there is no other solution.

You will need to discuss your situation with your school and your school will need to confirm in writing that all the specific circumstances have been met.

Exam travel

You may be eligible for assistance for travel between your home and an exam centre to do a supplementary or deferred exam.

You are expected to stay at your place of study until your normal exam period ends, and would only qualify for exam travel for unexpected supplementary or deferred exams.

Graduation travel

You may be eligible for assistance for travel between your home and the location of the graduation ceremony if:

  • you completed a:
    • tertiary course you received ABSTUDY for, that was equivalent to a course of at least 2 years full time, or
    • a postgraduate degree you received ABSTUDY for, and
  • you were approved for ABSTUDY Fares Allowance to do your course away from home, or
  • you were approved for ABSTUDY Fares Allowance to do your course through a combination of external studies and face to face teaching, or
  • you were approved for travel assistance under the Indigenous Education Training Program

If you only received ABSTUDY Fares Allowance during your course for a placement, field trip or testing and assessment program under Away from Base travel, you are not entitled to graduation travel.

You cannot get help with meals or accommodation for graduation travel, unless you have to stay overnight due to the travel schedule.
