Update your family income estimate using your Centrelink online account

Your family income estimate is used to work out how much family assistance you get, like Family Tax Benefit and Child Care Benefit.

If you receive these payments you need to make sure that your income estimate is up to date and accurate.

Your estimate should reflect your family’s financial circumstances for the whole financial year. It’s important that you try to give us the most accurate family income estimate you can, so we can pay you the right amount of family assistance. If you overestimate your family income, you may be underpaid during the year. If you underestimate, you may be overpaid and incur a debt, which you will need to pay back.

Your payments will be balanced after the end of the financial year when we have confirmed your income with the Australian Taxation Office or you have told us you are not required to lodge a tax return. If you have been underpaid any outstanding amounts will be paid to you (time limits apply). If you have been overpaid a debt will be raised. You may also be entitled to further benefits after the end of the financial year such as Family Tax Benefit supplements.

If you or your partner receive an income support payment such as Parenting Payment, Newstart Allowance or Disability Support Pension, you will need to report changes in your income or earnings for that payment separately. The easiest way to do this is via your Centrelink online account or our Express Plus App. You can refer to the Report Employment Income guide or search ‘Report Income’ at humanservices.gov.au for further information.
