Newstart Allowance - How to claim

There are 9 steps to claim Newstart Allowance. Before you begin, check if you can get it.

Once you've started your claim (step 3), you’ll have 14 days to complete your application, attend appointments and submit supporting documents. We assess your claim faster if you submit your documents as soon as possible.

Steps to claim Newstart Allowance

  1. Visiting a service centre

    1. Create accounts and link them

If you've never claimed before, you need to create a Centrelink account by visiting a service centre.

You'll need to link this account to your myGov account.

  2. Gather Documents

    2. Get your documents ready

You'll need some documents to prove you should get Newstart.

You must get separation certificates from every employer you've finished working for in the last 12 months.

  3. Claim online

    3. Fill in the claim form

Sign into myGov. Go to your Centrelink online account and start the Newstart claim.

You must agree to make some commitments while you get Newstart payments.

    4. Provide the documents

Must complete within 14 days after step 3

Submit the documents we ask for to support your claim. We assess your claim faster if you upload them before your phone call with us (step 5).

You can submit documents in several ways. You can use your Centrelink online account through myGov or the Express Plus Centrelink mobile app.

    5. Phone call with us

Must complete within 14 days after step 3

When you make your Newstart claim you'll book a time for us to call you. This call is important.

During this phone call we'll explain the things you need to do and book an appointment with an employment services provider.

    6. Meet with an employment services provider

Must complete within 14 days after step 3

You'll meet with an employment services provider, for example jobactive. They will talk about your skills and help you look for work.

Read more about jobactive on the Department of Employment website.

We make this appointment for you during step 5.

    7. Check your myGov Inbox

We’ll let you know the result of your claim through your myGov Inbox. You can expect to hear from us within 21 days of lodging your claim.

If we need more information we will send a message to your myGov Inbox.

If you think we’ve made a mistake you can ask us to review our decision.

    8. Do your first report

You won't get your first payment until you make your first report.

We’ll tell you the date you need to report when we let you know the result of your claim.

  9. 9. Report on your job search every 2 weeks

You need to be looking for a job and report every 2 weeks to keep getting Newstart Allowance.
