Managing provider numbers using HPOS

A guide to applying for new provider numbers and managing existing numbers in HPOS.

Information to assist you to:

  • apply for a new provider number for a new location without having to submit a manual form
  • manage existing provider number details including update telephone, email and fax details for your respective locations

You must have an individual PKI certificate to access these services through HPOS. PKI certificates ensure that your requests through our online services are secure.

An overseas trained doctor cannot create a new provider location (number) in HPOS but they can manage existing numbers. If an overseas trained doctor needs to apply for a new provider number, they must complete a manual form, Application for an additional location provider number for an Allied Health Professional form.

Manage existing provider number details

This enables you to view and edit the details of your provider numbers, including close and reopen locations.

  • select My details from the main menu
  • select My provider numbers
  • select My provider number details
  • select edit to update numbers, emails and fax numbers
  • select edit to close locations and reopen closed locations
  • select Submit when details are correct

Create a new provider location (number)

You must have a provider number for each location you work.

When you apply for a new provider number in HPOS the number is issued and shown on the screen immediately and a copy of the number is also sent to your HPOS Messages.

A new provider number is effective from the moment it is issued however we recommend you wait 2 business days before submitting claims using the new number.

  • select My details from the main menu
  • select My provider numbers
  • select Create a new provider location
  • read the privacy note and
  • select Next to provide address details
  • select Next to provide contact details
  • select Submit Location to complete
    The new number will be displayed on the screen and sent to your HPOS Messages
