Check the progress of your Medicare provider number application

Important update for new health professionals.

If you’ve recently applied for a Medicare provider number to start work as a health professional, it’s a busy time of year. Applications for Medicare provider numbers can take up to 6 weeks to process. 

There’s no need to call to check on the progress of your application, processing times are on our website. Once processed you’ll get a letter from us with your Medicare provider number.

This number identifies you as a health professional at your practice location. You can’t start billing until you have your provider number, so it’s important you apply if you haven’t already.

When registering for a provider number for a new location, HPOS is a faster and easier alternative digital option.
